OTTAWA - BlackBerry mobile phone maker agreed to sell the company at USD 4.7 billion or around Rp 53.8 trillion to a consortium led by Fairfax Financial .

In a statement , Fairfax said the BlackBerry is now the largest shareholder has offered USD 9 per share in cash to buy the company .

However , Blackberry says will keep exploring other options in the middle of the negotiations . On Friday ( 20/9 ) , the BlackBerry has announced to cut 4,500 workers because of financial losses.

This Canadian company is expected to lose about $ 1 billion after the sale of its new mobile phone models are not as good as expected .

Intent to sell the company was already mentioned BlackBerry in August . But only on Monday ( 23/9 ) , the mobile phone company announced that it has entered into a letter agreement under which a consortium led by Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited has offered to take over the company .

" The assessment process ( due diligence ) is expected to be completed by 4 November 2013 . Related parties will negotiate and formalize a definitive transaction on that date , " said the source as reported DigitalOne BlackBerry , Tuesday ( 24/9 ) .

However , Blackberry said talks with Fairfax not exclusive . Blackberry can actively solicit , receive , evaluate and potentially to enter into negotiations with other potential buyers .

Leader of Fairfax , Prem Watsa , believe this transaction will open up an exciting new chapter for Blackberry , customers , operators and employees .

" This purchase will make the Blackberry a private company , so as to allow the company to reorganize without being observed by investors on Wall Street , " said Brian Colello , an analyst at Morningstar .

While Ben Wood , Head of Research at CCS Insight , said the agreement with Fairfax will provide breathing space for the Blackberry to assess their strategic options . " Early indications show there should be savings in their business . Broader structural changes such as the spin - off Blackberry Messenger and reduce hardware division may also be viewed with caution , " he said .

Blackberry financial problems started earlier this year following disappointing sales of new models of mobile phones Z10 . Released in January after many delays this phone has failed to revive the consumer .
