LONDON - As many as 186 Muslim inmates sue the British government for serving Halal food that has been contaminated pork . The inmates are scattered in three prisons in England that require compensation in the form of money because they feel their rights have been violated .
" The Ministry of Justice has received a number of civil lawsuits over claims the discovery of a number of halal food contaminated in early March of this year , " said Minister of Justice UK , Jeremy Wright as quoted by The Telegraph newspaper , Sunday ( 29/9 ) .
The discovery of contaminated food stems from a large - scale investigation of the British government held horse meat scandal that shook Europe in the beginning of this year . Investigation results in a number of prisons found to contain pork in some menus like pie , steak , sausage and bread that is intended specifically for Muslim prisoners .
Food contamination is found among others in the Sheppey Prison Cluster , Verne and Special Prison kids Thorn Cross in Cheshire . Levels of contamination were found ranging from only 5 percent to 100 percent pork .
The inmates are using Article 9 of the Convention of European countries about human rights as the basis for their lawsuit . The article protects the right to freedom of thought , conscience and religion .
But the British government is unlikely to let the prisoners get compensation easily . Because the current British government is trying to suppress compensation for inmates .
In the last four years the British government has reached £ 16 million or about Rp288 billion to pay compensation to hundreds of inmates . Because of this , the prisoners feared Muslim lawsuit will further enrich the " compensation culture " in British prisons .
" Each claim will be considered based on appropriateness and fought with indomitable if deemed necessary , " Minister Wright .
Just a note , there are currently 11,248 Muslim prisoners languishing in prisons of England and Wales . This amount includes 13.1 percent of the total number of prisoners in the region
